Roberto Ferreira (Creed) Interview

The house of Creed is world’s only private luxury fragrance dynasty.  Currently under the leadership of perfumer Olivier Creed, the house will eventually pass through to the next generation with Erwin.  With the rapid changes in the fragrance industry, Creed strives to maintain their classic traditions while modernizing to stay relevant and inspirational to the next generation.   With the advent of the internet and fragrance blogs/criticism, the open discussion and analysis of perfume is much more widespread.  If you look at blogs, you will often see many threads discussing the Creed line of scents.  I had the honor of speaking with Roberto Ferreira, the National Creed educator and the Curator of the Creed Collection for North America, and we discussed everything from vaulting, IFRA, naturals and yes, the effect of the blogosphere.

Ron Slomowicz: What is it that you do at Creed?
Roberto Ferreira: I am the national trainer, which is my main title. I am also the curator, which means that I work in conjunction with the marketing department and I work in terms of fragrances by season. I avoid problems like promoting Love in Black in the summer. I avoid those kinds of problems that they can’t understand. I work in conjunction to help them promote fragrances and events through social media. I work with the public relations department making sure that the info coming from Paris is filtered through me before the public. Every time I go to the office, there are piles of questions and sheets that are missing information. I am the one that makes sure at the technical level that all the notes, words and descriptions are in their place. For instance, avoiding things like Mandarin listed as the base note and Musk as the top note.

Creed Acier Aluminum Fragrance Review

* Acier Aluminum starts off with a bracing and energizing metallic note, laced with bananas.

* Yes, this smells just as strange as you would imagine, but is quite cooling and great for summer.

Creed Bois du Portugal Fragrance Review

* The fragrance kicks off with a blend of bergamot, lavender, woods, and spices.

* Bois means woods, and this scent was inspired by the woods of Portugal.

* What you smell on top is what you get for most of the span as this scent is mostly linear, until the base comes in which is often after 8-12 hours.

* The bergamot and lavender eventually fade as the sandalwood and cedar become the main focus.  A little spice is left and there is a light grass smell hazed on top.

Summary:  Bois Du Portugal has an old school and distinguished, manly feel to it.  Some refer to it as a 70s/80s powerhouse and I can totally see that as it is strong and projects.  Wear this to an office if you are a CEO or want to feel like one.   It’s one of those scents that gives off the smell of “old money.”  I couldn’t imagine anyone under the age of 30 wearing this, but I can be wrong.  If you happen to have a bottle of Tom Ford Private Blends Bois Rouge, this is similar, but longer-lasting and has more depth.  I know this because I skin tested the two back-to-back for weeks before making a decision to buy a bottle a few years ago.  With everything in my fragrance collection,  I find myself reaching for BDP quite often and the more than half empty bottle is a testament to that.

Creed fragrances are available from Neiman Marcus, select Nordstrom and the Creed Boutique.   If you live in South Florida, I strongly recommend that you reach out to Eduardo, the Creed representative at the Bal Harbour Neiman Marcus.  If you live in Nashville, Byron at Green Hills Nordstrom is quite exceptional as well.

Creed Virgin Island Water Fragrance Review

* Virgin Island Water is a vacation in a jar.  The long lasting top notes of coconut, lime, and orange smell like a beachside cocktail.

* Usually citrus top notes burn off really quickly, but the lime and orange last throughout most of the fragrance.

* Unless you pay attention and sniff yourself often, VIW seems very linear as in the top notes stay around for the full life of the fragrance.

* If you sniff closely, some ginger, spices and light florals enter in mid-development for a short while.

* The deep base notes of vanilla and musk join the coconut which stays around forever.

* While most vacations are over too quickly, Virgin Island Water lasts more than 8 hours.

Summary:   Virgin Island Water is strong, but not overpowering.  It makes its presence known but is not so overwhelming as to be too much for warm weather wear.   If you are a fan of the classic Creed fragrance, this may not be to your liking.  It is more similar to the fresher/fruitier Creed fragrances like Aventus.   Although I have never smelled it, several people have mentioned that Virgin Island Water is identical to Bath and Body Works Coconut Lime Verbena (which has been discontinued).  I can’t comment on that, but I can say that Virgin Island Water is one of the few fragrances that I have used up a full 4oz bottle of and went back to buy another bottle of.  For summer weather and hot climates, Virgin Island Water is an excellent choice and worth testing.
