Lush Scent Snow Fairy Fragrance Review

lush-scent-snow-fairy
* The top smells just like the shower gel – sweet cotton candy (what the Brits call candy floss)

* It is loud and projects strongly – but it’s not as overbearing as the shower gel can be.  That’s not saying it’s weak or anything – it’s just not AS strong as it could be.

* Wait, I take that back.  After five minutes it gets stronger.  Okay, here comes the cotton candy attack with bubble gum and vanilla as supporting players.  Imagine floating in clouds of cotton candy .   It feels like you are enveloped in it.

* While it is quite linear, there is a bit of melon that wafts in from time to time.

* The sweetness stays present even when it dries down to a sweet vanilla musk and becomes a skin scent.

Summary:  I am a huge fan of Lush Snow Fairy Shower Gel, so when I hear they were releasing the pure perfume version, I ordered it the first day.  The perfume is faithful to the shower gel and will bring a smile to your face.  Spray some on and your spirit is instantly lifted.  With the strong projection and silage, this isn’t office-friendly and I couldn’t imagine wanting to smell like cotton candy in the office anyhow.  Longevity is really good – between 8 and 12 hours when I wear it.  Since the shower gel is colored pink, this is obviously aimed feminine, but it definitely smells great on the right guy as well.

Perfume Shopping: Lady Ruth Parfumerie (Louisville)

lady-ruth-perfumes

Sometimes you happen upon a treasure that you just want to share with the world. I mentioned to a friend that I was DJing in Louisville and she said that I had to visit Miss Ruth at The Perfumerie.

Walking into the Perfumerie, the first thing you see is the two tables carrying the full Amouage line. The Oman-based line is highly-respected and very hard to find in the South (the only other stores carrying it in the South are Gus Mayer in Birmingham and Art With Flowers in Virginia). Though I am willing to guess that neither of those stores has a woman as colorful as Ruth.

When I first met writer Denyse Beaulieu (The Perfume Lover), I described her with my highly complimentary term – bawdy broad – a woman of a certain age who speaks her mind and doesn’t care what others think, backed with a lifetime of knowledge and experiences worth sharing. Ruth could be Denyse’s lost sister from the south – or Clairee Belcher from Steel Magnolias (if Clairee was a perfume expert). She knows a lot about perfume but shares her love for the art with simple explanation and her own take on it. She doesn’t just list notes or recite a memorized story, she is much more colorful than that.

For example, after she greeted us she told us to look to our right and check out Mona Di Orio. Yes, they have the full line including the recently released Violet Fumee – which she described as a cloud of violets that you can breathe in (which is an incredible description). On the same table, there is the full Ramon Monegal collection as well (another line that is a challenge to find outside of Bergdorf Goodman or Neiman Marcus). Then I spotted candles and scents from Tiziana Terenzi and I realized that she had chosen specific lines that would appeal to a Southern woman or man who have a sense of international adventure.

Exploring the store, you will find select mainstream and designer scents along with some interesting vintage classics (a few Guerlains, Carons, etc.). In the far back, there is a custom scent area where she will blend you a perfume or lotion with a scent you described. All of the ingredients are laid out there for you to sniff as well (a great way to learn how to identify single notes).

All around the store are gorgeous custom perfume bottles and decanters which are actually for sale; I found a special red/orange glass decanter which I bought for my living room.

The store also offers mail order on everything over the phone or through their website http://www.LadyRuthPerfumes.com . The prices are very fair and she offers samples with every purchase (or if you ask nicely). Though this is a store you really need to visit for yourself to meet the eccentric and charming Ruth. I wonder if the people of Louisville realize what a treasure they have in the city – an amazing niche perfume store with the finest scents from around the world, curated and hosted by a special woman who you will never forget.

Guerlain Moscow Fragrance Review

* Imagine a drunk forester in an orchard.  Or at least an absinthe drinker with pine resin on his coat, drinking cranberry spiked lemonade.

* Those two guys in the cranapple commercials come to mind.

* A soft polished jasmine comes into focus as the cranberry fades to the back.   The licorice/absinthe note provides some depth to the jasmine.

* After the heart notes comes into focus, it becomes a skin scent.

* The base is soft pipe tobacco with a hint of vanilla.

Summary:   When I visited the Guerlain boutique on the Champs Elysees back in 2011, I knew I was going to buy Chamade Pour Homme, and the SA showed me around to another new scents.  I liked this one on first sniff so it was kind of a blind buy.  I like it, but I don’t love it so it’s not one that I would have bought if I had tested it more in depth.  It’s marketed as feminine but it’s easily unisex.  It’s sheer and pretty but it doesn’t really stand out, especially in the Guerlain house. It is a safe fragrance – nothing out of the ordinary – mainly because it is a little muted and soft to the skin.  It’s worth a test but I think you can find a better Guerlain.

Smell Bent Holiday Collection Ice Station Zebra Fragrance Review

smell-bent-ice-station-zebra

* I don’t want to say it smells cold – but it starts off with a mix of frozen forest and clean antiseptic wound dressing.

* It’s an odd dichotomy – great outdoors and operating room.

* Thankfully the scent goes more in the outdoors direction with pine and dirt smells taking the lead.

* The scent quickly fades into a woodsy base with a slight hint of musk.

Summary: To pitch this as a holiday scent, I would say that you are going outside into the snowy forest and chopping down a Christmas tree.  The scent journey matches that pretty closely.  It reminds me of A*Men Pure Sport for its bracing cold burst.  This would be a great after gym scent or in hot weather for a refreshing zing. It’s office-friendly and would make an interesting conversation starter.  If you do wear it at the office, be prepare to reapply after lunch as it is pretty much gone after three hours (a little less than average).
